Museums in Athens
The city of Athens boasts a number of museums of high archaeological, historical, cultural and religious importance, which are mainly scattered downtown.
The Numismatic Museum of Athens
The Numismatic Museum of Athens is one of the oldest state museums of Greece and was institutionalized on 1834. Since 1984 it’s hosted in Iliou Melathron, a building of outstanding, neoclassical architecture. This building was designed by the famous German architect Ernest Schiller as the residence of the Sleeman family and it’s decorated with unique frescoes, ceiling paintings and mosaics. The Museum has more than 500.000 exhibits and the richest collections are those of ancient coins.
